Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau has urged the federal government to work more closely with provinces on immigration matters, in particular how the government oversees the temporary foreign worker program.

Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Chris Alexander, announced that Canada has welcomed its 150,000 new citizen of 2014. This is around double the number compared with the same period last year.

Having seen just two completed applications in the Start-up Visa Program, a pilot program brought into being in early 2013, Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Chris Alexander, has promised to speed up the process.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivered a keynote speech in Toronto at the Pearson Convention Centre on Thursday. A survey by Environics Research Group found that 77 percent of students are optimistic about finding and enjoying work in their field, and more than half expect to be able to pay back students loans without difficulty.

The Quebec Skilled Worker Program has reached the maximum number of applications it will accept this year. The program, which was re-opened on April 1, 2014, had placed a cap of 6,500 on application intake.

During a visit to Vancouver this past Wednesday, Federal Employment Minister Jason Kenney highlighted Canada’s opportunity to take advantage of the current state of the United States’ immigration system by attracting young foreign nationals from the tech sector.

Jason Kenney, the Canadian Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister for Multiculturalism, recently returned from a visit to the country of Lebanon. While there, the Minister discussed the deepening of economic relations and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting the country’s ongoing efforts to address the Syrian refugee crisis.

Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander welcomed the first two successful applicants under Canada’s Start-Up Visa Program on July 16 in Vancouver. The program is designed to attract more entrepreneurs to the country and create jobs for Canadians.
