Canadian Immigration Minister wishes for a peaceful Ramadan

the CanadaVisa Team - 03 August, 2011

Canada has long been home to many Muslim immigrants. According to the 2006 Census, there were close to 1 million Muslims living in Canada. The majority of Muslim immigrants live in the province of Ontario, with the larger groups settled around Toronto. Immigrants of all religious backgrounds choose to immigrate to Canada as there is no official religious discrimination according to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In recognition of the many Muslims living in Canada and around the world, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism recently made the following statement:

“The holy month of Ramadan, which begins today, takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. For Muslims in Canada and around the world, this month is a time of profound worship and contemplation as Muslims are called upon to fast, pray and read the Qur’an. Ramadan is a month of deep spirituality and a time to practice self-discipline and self-evaluation, as well as charitable giving. Prayer, fasting during the month of Ramadan, and charitable giving are three of the five pillars of Islam.

“For all Canadians, this month provides an excellent opportunity to learn about Islam and to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Muslims have made to this country’s rich and diverse heritage. As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a peaceful Ramadan to Muslims everywhere as they observe this most solemn month on their calendar. Ramadan Kareem.”
