Last week, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) announced that it would be seeking input from Canadian citizens on immigration issues. The public is invited to fill out an online consultation, which will be open until August 31, 2013, on immigration levels and mix.

These online consultations will be supplemented by Parliamentary Secretary Rick Dykstra, who will travel the country speaking with important stakeholders. These two efforts will help inform the government in their decision-making on intake for economic, family, and humanitarian immigrants.

“Since 2006, the Government of Canada has welcomed the highest sustained levels of immigration in Canadian history,” said Immigration Minister Jason Kenney. “Given the importance of immigration to our economic growth and long-term prosperity, we are especially keen to hear the views of Canadians as we prepare for the years ahead.”

CIC took care to mention that several factors are considered when determining what level of immigration is appropriate for Canada. These include ‘immigration objective [...] broader government commitments, input from provinces and territories, and current and future economic conditions.
