Canada looks ahead to impending labour shortages

the CanadaVisa Team - 07 July, 2011

The Government of Canada has launched a website to help Canadians identify which job sectors are hiring and which sectors are likely to experience growth in the future.

Diane Finley, Human Resources Minister, announced in a news conference that the aim of the website is to help students and job seekers understand which skills are needed in today’s changing Canadian economy.

“This is becoming a skills crisis, we want to avert that,” said Finley. “So we are trying something new. We are going to work really closely with the private sector on this because they are the ones that are driving the demand. They are the ones that can see it coming.”

The new Working in Canada website will let students and prospective immigrants know how to plan their future career choices. In addition, students and workers will be able to discover which parts of Canada are in most need of specific skills.

The website suggests that a shortage of nurses will be coming, “over the period of 2009-2018, job openings are expected to total 161,705. It is expected that 116,455 job seekers will be available to fill these job openings.”

"Better information will help Canadians find jobs and make the right learning and career choices," added Finley.
