The Government of Canada has recently signed Labout Market Agreements (LMA) with the provinces of Alberta, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador to ensure that all residents have the ability to participate and contribute to the workforces in each province. The new LMA's focus primarily on helping people move from lower-skilled work to better jobs in sectors such as health care, construction, and manufacturing.
Similar agreements will be signed with other provinces in the coming months.
The agreements are part of Advantage Canada, the federal government' long-term economic plan to create the "best-educated, most skilled, and most flexible work force in the world." The Government of Canada will invest $500 million annually over the next six years to increase the size and quality of the national work force.
Under the plan, $316 million will go to Alberta, $46 million to Newfoundland and Labrador, and $12 million will be invested in Prince Edward Island's workforce over the six year period.
A portion of these agreements addresses providing additional training for immigrants in order to help them enter the workforce more quickly.
