A recent Fraser Institute survey named the province of Alberta as having North America's best-performing labour market over the past five years, beating out 50 American states and all other Canadian provinces and territories. Among Canadian provinces, Saskatchewan was named the second best performing labour market, finishing 10th overall, and British Columbia received the 12th position. The study looked at labour relations laws, public sector employment, unionization and minimum wages as labour market aspects that directly affect performance.
With the highest employment growth rate in the country, Alberta performed consistently well across all measures of the Fraser Institute survey. The most notable annual increases in employment for the Services-Producing industries were in Health Care and Social Assistance, Wholesale Trade, and Building and Other Support Services. Alberta continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in Canada, with Calgary's as the lowest among Canadian cities and Edmonton's as the fourth lowest. Currently in a shortage labour market, there are many current job opportunities in Alberta.
