Canada’s unemployment rate has decreased to approximately 7.6% as a result of additional jobs being added to the labour market, matching the number of Canadians entering the labour force.

The Government of Canada and the province of Manitoba are investing $9 million to renovate old housing units in Winnipeg for new immigrants. Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) will be overseeing the management of properties once the project is complete. One of the main goals of IRCOM is to provide immigrants with affordable housing in addition to providing settlement services.

In the past, the United States was considered a top destination for immigrants looking for a better life. Since 2007, the US economy has been greatly unstable, meaning immigrants, including Americans, are looking for a land with better opportunities. Canada is quickly growing in popularity and for good reasons.

A recent poll from Sigma Analytics indicated that a majority of Saskatchewan residents agree or strongly agreed that immigrants are hard workers who contribute to the Canadian economy.

In 2010, Manitoba experienced a 17% increase in the number of immigrants arriving in the province. It is estimated that over 15,000 permanent residents arrived in Manitoba this past year.

Prince Edward Island was once considered a mostly homogenous society. Most immigrants arriving in Canada chose to settle in more popular areas, such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. Recent statistics show that this trend is now changing.

Due to higher numbers of immigrants settling in the province of Alberta, the government of Canada has decided to increase funding for settlement agencies in the province. It is expected that Alberta will receive over $64 million in order to assist immigrants settle into their new Canadian communities.

As Canada’s economy continues to strengthen, more jobs are being added every day. While the service industry continues to dominate the Canadian economy, there are other sectors that will be adding even more jobs in the coming year.

According to a survey of international schools conducted by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, Canada was found to have some of the highest performing students in the world. Students from countries such as China, Australia, Finland, Japan, Canada and more were tested on mathematical and reading skills and their knowledge of the sciences.
