Citizenship by descent is awarded to individuals with Canadian ancestry

The majority of Canadians by birth gain their citizenship from having been born in Canada, and prove their citizenship using their birth certificates.

If you were born outside Canada, and are the child by birth or adoption of at least one Canadian parent, you may be eligible for Canadian citizenship by descent, affording you all the rights and privileges of Canadian citizenship.

Use the calculator below to determine eligibility for acquiring Canadian citizenship by descent.

Proof of citizenship

If you qualify, you can apply to the Canadian federal government for proof of citizenship.

You’ll have to include documentation proving that you are the child of a Canadian parent, and pay the application fee.

If your application is successful, you’ll receive a citizenship certificate.

With your citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship) in hand, you can apply for a Canadian passport.
