Detroit Visa Office to Close

The Visa Office at the Canadian Consulate in Detroit has been closed. Its services have now been transferred to the New York City and Los Angeles Visa Offices.

Quebec Amends List of Occupations for Facilitated Labour Market Opinion

The Government of Quebec announced yesterday that its list of occupations for the Facilitated Labour Market Opinion (FLMO) program has been amended. The FLMO is a provincial program that allows employers wishing to hire a foreign worker in a targeted profession obtain a positive Labour Market Opinion (LMO) without needing to recruit in Canada.

Proposed Bill Could Strip Terrorists of Canadian Citizenship

Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney stated that his government would like the power to strip citizenship from Canadians who commit terrorism or acts of war. This statement was made one day after a dual Canadian and Lebanese citizen was indicated as a participant in a bus bombing in Bulgaria last year.

Processing Changes at Canadian Visa Offices in the United States

According to CIC, the program will be the first of its kind in any country. Its unique partnership model is intended to “position [Canada] as a destination of choice for start-ups”.

Canada to resettle up to 5,000 Iranian and Iraqi refugees by 2018

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has announced plans to resettle up to 5,000 Iranian and Iraqi refugees, presently in Turkey, by 2018. Citing "escalating violence in the region," Immigration Minister Jason Kenney outlined his government's intention to "help Turkey deal with this growing pressure." He also commended the government of Turkey "for keeping her borders open to those fleeing the ongoing conflict in the region."
