Canada Scores Well in Europe's Migrant Integration Policy Index

the CanadaVisa Team - 21 July, 2015

It was the first time that the Europe-wide immigration index included Canada in its 28-nation study, which explores how countries integrate newcomers into mainstream society. Grading nations based on their immigration policies and legislative frameworks for peaceful integration, the index ranked Canada in fifth place overall, tied with Finland.

Canada ranked first in several categories, including its openness to dual citizenship. Canada's score was also boosted by its anti-discrimination policies and the nation's focus on family reunification through immigration. The promotion of equality and immigrant access to human rights protection in Canada was a contributing factor to the top-five result.

The purpose of the Migrant Integration Policy Index for 2007 is to highlight effective policies and encourage reforms for increased social harmony and economic benefits for nations with important immigration inflows.

Sweden ranked number one with a score of 88 out of the ideal 100 (the most welcoming possible legal framework for newcomer integration). Canada received a score of 67.
