Canada invited another 5,000 federal Express Entry system candidates to apply for Canadian permanent residence.

This means that a total of 102,350 immigration candidates were invited to apply in 2020, surpassing the 100,000 mark for the first time. This is also the largest number of invitations ever issued in a calendar year.

Canada surpassed its original target on November 18, when a record breaking 5,000 candidates were issued invitations to apply for permanent residence.

The recent increase in the number of invitations may come as no surprise, after Canada announced its plans to welcome a record number of new permanent residents by 2023.

Canada plans to welcome over 400,000 new permanent residents every year between 2021 and 2023. At least 100,000 of these will come through the Express Entry system.

Those invited must have been awarded a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 469. This is only the second time the minimum CRS score required was below 470.

In this draw, the tie-breaking rule was applied. This means that candidates who had a CRS score of 469 or more, only received an invitations had they submitted their Express Entry profile before June 4, 2020, at 22:26:05 UTC.

The Express Entry system manages the pool of eligible candidates for Canada's Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class and the Canadian Experience Class.

In addition, some Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are aligned with the federal Express Entry system.

Candidates applying to immigrate to Canada through any of these programs are awarded a point score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Points are given based on various human capital factors such as their age, work experience, education and language proficiency.

The highest-ranking candidates in the Express Entry pool are invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence through regular Express Entry draws.
