Canada is launching six new immigration streams that will seek to welcome up to 90,000 applications in 2021.

Canada's immigration minister Marco Mendicino made this major announcement on April 14, 2021.

The purpose of the streams is to enable more candidates currently residing in Canada to transition to permanent residence.

This is part of Canada's ongoing efforts to welcome 401,000 new immigrants in 2021.

Canada continues to target high levels of immigration to promote its economic growth.

Immigration will help to support the population and labour force growth Canada depends on for its economic prosperity.

Mendicino has stated high levels of immigration will be key to supporting Canada's economic recovery beyond the coronavirus pandemic.

Beginning May 6, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will welcome applications under three new streams:

These streams will be open until November 5, 2021, or when their intake cap is reached, whatever comes first.

The streams are available to workers in 40 healthcare occupations, as well as 95 jobs in other fields deemed by the Canadian government to be essential. Generally speaking, a worker needs at least one year of Canadian work experience and to achieve the minimum language requirements to be eligible.

To be eligible, generally speaking, international students must have completed a post-secondary program at a Canadian designated learning institution no earlier than January 2017, as well as meet minimum language criteria.

The streams exist to candidates living in any province or territory except for Quebec.

IRCC has also announced it will launch three streams for French-speaking candidates. The streams will not have intake caps. IRCC said it will release details shortly.
