22,000 new jobs added to Canadian labour market in December

the CanadaVisa Team - 07 January, 2011

Canada’s unemployment rate has decreased to approximately 7.6% as a result of additional jobs being added to the labour market, matching the number of Canadians entering the labour force.

22,000 new jobs were added in December 2010 alone, many of which were in the manufacturing, warehousing, transportation, and the natural resource sector.

According to Statistics Canada, full-time employment increased to 38,000 in December and more increases are expected for 2011. Since December 2009, the number of people employed in the public sector increased by 4.2% (or 143,000 people), whereas the private sector had a slightly lower increase of 3.1% (332,000 people).

Youth employment also experienced an increase of 26,000 in 2010. Certain provinces experienced higher growth than others. In particular, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador saw higher number of job gains.

The growing employment rate in Canada may be related to the strengthening economy in the United States. As the U.S. economy strengthens and auto sales increase, Canada is able to export more to the United States.
