Canadian Government Investing in Online Resources for Immigration

In recognition of the value of online resources for individuals looking to immigrate to Canada, the Government of Canada has committed new funding to support efforts by a number of Canadian provinces to improve their online presence. Canada’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration the Honourable Diane Finley announced recently that nearly $19 million in new funds will be allocated towards improving the quality and availability of online immigration resources.

The funding will go towards providing online content and tools that help with each step of the immigration process, ranging from promoting provinces as destinations for immigration to information about Provincial Nomination Programs. The funding also extends to settlement services that help newcomers establish themselves in Canada after arrival. A majority of Canadian provinces will receive assistance as part of this program, as will a number of municipal governments who will share useful information about their cities.

Ontario, which receives approximately 60% of new immigrants to Canada each year, will receive approximately $10 million under the newly announced funding. The province has a significant online presence with portals at www.ontarioimmigration.ca/index.asp and www.settlement.org for information about moving to and settling in the province respectively. Minister Finley stressed the value of investing in online resources in today’s global technological climate, saying that "as the Internet often serves as a primary source of information, the provision of timely, accurate and relevant information is essential”.
