Saskatchewan opens PNP to hospitality workers for fast-track immigration

the CanadaVisa Team - 23 July, 2015

The Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program (SINP) has recentlyintroduced the Hospitality Sector Project, under which certain foreign workers in the hospitality field can be nominated for priority processingCanadian permanent residency.

The category was created in response to the Saskatchewan Hotel and Hospitality Association and the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association’sidentification of acute labour shortages in three occupational groups: food counter attendants, food and beverage servers, and light-duty cleaners.Saskatchewan employers have been unable to find local workers to fill these positions and have been looking to temporary foreign workers in order tostaff their businesses.

Under the Saskatchewan PNP Hospitality Sector Project, temporary foreign workers who have been working for an approved employer in Saskatchewan in oneof the three occupational groups for a minimum of six months are eligible to apply to the SINP. Applicants must have a minimum of Grade 12 education(or equivalent) and the necessary English language abilities to continue to work in their occupation.

This is a Canadian immigration option for those who are not yet in Saskatchewan as well. Individuals who can obtain a temporary job offer from a Saskatchewan employer can apply for a Temporary Work Permit and then, after six months on that permit, can beeligible for the new SINP Hospitality Sector Project.

Saskatchewan employers must meet Service Canada criteria and submit a recruitment and settlement plan to the SINP.

In addition to the Hospitality Sector Project, the Saskatchewan PNP has specificcategories for foreign skilled workers, international students, family members who are overseas, health professionals, long-haul truck drivers, farmers, and entrepreneurs. The province has set a target of 2,800 nominations under the SINP for 2008-2009, an 85 per cent increase over this year’starget of 1,500.
