Canada Seeks to Attract British and Irish Workers

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney recently traveled to the United Kingdom on a formal business trip. The primary objective of his five-day trip is to encourage young British and Irish graduates to consider coming to Canada to live and work.

Due to its struggling economy, many British have begun looking for opportunities outside their borders. As native English speakers who often possess highly sought-after degrees, Minister Kenney believes that Canada is the ideal place for these individuals to pursue their personal and career goals.

“There are a lot of young Britons who are under-employed or unemployed but highly educated,” said Minister Kenney. “We want to be at the forefront of the competition for the world’s best and brightest.”

Already, the Minister has announced plans to double the number of Irish youth who come to Canada through the International Experience Canada program. Starting in 2013, the number of slots available for Irish participants will be raised by 1,000 for a total of 6,350. By 2014, it is anticipated that the quota will be almost doubled again, with a projected intake of 10,000 per year.

Kenney listed the many reasons Brits should choose Canada over other similar countries such as Australia. He cited close proximity to the UK as well as an economy that is currently the strongest of all G8 countries.
