New Competition Celebrates Immigration in Canadian Culture

the CanadaVisa Team - 18 July, 2015

As a multicultural society, Canadian culture is shaped by the contributions of immigrants. A new competition being run by Radio Canada International is celebrating this contribution by inviting young people in Canada to use their artistic skills to tell stories about immigrating to Canada.

The competition, called Digital Diversity, is now open for entry until the end of June. It is being hosted by Radio Canada International’s web-based radio service for immigration, called RCI Viva. Radio Canada International is part of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which is Canada’s national public broadcaster.

Digital Diversity is calling for audio and video submissions approximately 5 minutes long which help to express Canadian multiculturalism. There are two main themes to focus on for the competition; to focus on an interesting individual from one of Canada’s immigrant or cultural communities, or fictional stories that portray the Canadian immigration experience. The competition is only open to younger Canadians, between 18 and 35.

As a nation built by immigrants, Canada has an official policy of multiculturalism which recognizes the value of rich cultural diversity. According to spokesperson Garvia Bailey, Digital Diversity aims to expose young Canadians to as much of this diversity as possible. "Canada is a country composed of many diverse communities. Digital Diversity aims to introduce all Canadians to life in these communities in a creative and expressive way”, said Bailey.
