Driving car from US to Canada, and back to US without importing.

Guys I have heard that insurance is pricey in Canada and people show US insurance history to get some discount. Unfortunately I happened to have two parking lot claims (both minor claims with any cop involvement, but at fault..one by me and another by my spouse) in last three months. We might move after 1-2 years to Canada and I believe claims stay on record for 3 years. So should I skip showing US history to Canadian insurance companies?

I hope that if good insurance history doesn't carry forward automatically, bad ones will follow the same.. I believe unless we tell the company, they won't know this or they'd check US history by themselves?

You will have to submit the driving history in canada while exchanging the license. They can easily pull out your history in USA. Parking tickets are not taken into consideration....

like email .6633 mentioned, the parking tickets may not be an issue. However, it is highly recommended that you get the driver's abstract from the state DMV. The driver's abstract from the state DMVs is necessary, and you can get it for your entire driving history in US. That said, if you have stayed in multiple states, try and get it from all the states if possible.

This is because in Ontario, like email.6633 mentioned earlier, the Ministry of Transportation will need these records from US DMVs (last 3 years is fine, entire history will be preferred) so that you can exchange your US license for a G license here. Not sure on how the licensing process is in other states, but in Ontario, if you are starting from scratch, you will get a G2 license, followed by a test and a G1 license followed by a road test. Once you have cleared these, you will then get the G license. So the overall process may take a long time. But they do exchange the licenses from certain countries and based on the records provided, they will either exchange it for G1, G2 or G.

I mentioned two minor collision insurance claims at parking lots without any cop involvement. Like hitting pole by mistake/scratching near by car and filing a claim with insurance for that.. Not parking lot tickets.

Q1. I will need to get Driving History/Abstract/Record from 3 US states. How many weeks in advance should I send out mail requests for these documents before moving to Canada?

Q2. My wife will have less than 2 years driving history from USA. Will she need to start from scratch in Ontario? OR will she get some non-beginner license?

Hello,

Can somebody help me in understanding that how the CBSA evaluate the price of an old car based on which GST is calculated?

Do they apply GST on the purchase price on title or do thay have a mechanism to find out the depreciated or current price of car?

Purchase price of my car is $15,500 and it is a 2013 model, what will be the GST I will have to pay if I am moving to Ontario?

Are you planning to pay duty on the car? FYI, You can move you car duty free to Canada as a settler.
