Passport surrender and OCI fees including basic BLS service fee (pickup option) / applicant is
= 251.10 + 433.10 = 684.20

If choose courier and other BLS oci service you may need to add around $60 to $80 extra.

Plain robbery imo
I couldn't agree more. Seems like they are punishing a person for renouncing Indian citizenship.

And it is disgusting.

On the contrary, this OCI thingy should actually be made free (sans some admin costs), if they truly valued the lineage of the NRIs.

I bet the number of OCI applications will go down as there are cheaper options.
The problem is ~ it cannot. Since we all will need to visit India off-n-on, have our links there, and this card works as an all-purpose doc, more importantly to assist in an off-the-cuff flight. Which a visa can't.

Ps.: Did you know OCI cardholders do not need the Adhaar card? Wherever the Adhaar card is needed the OCI card can be flashed in lieu.

Yes. Oci pays itself if you visit India for more than 4 times.

I just found another option to apply for OCI in India. Its 15000 Rs. Also, surrender fee is 5000 Rs. So, one can save a bit by doing surrender and OCI in India, while on e visa.

The idea is good, though I highly doubt the Indian consulate would do it. No one would kill the goose who lays the golden eggs.

That is true. Most NRI's need this important document as they visit India every now and then.

I sometimes wish that in the not too distant future that India allows dual citizenship. Wishful thinking :)

Thats impractical because the whole process takes more than 60 days and eVisa is only valid for 60 days. This is assuming you apply on the day or your arrival. Plus, I think they will increase the INR fees to be inline with foreign currency fees.
