Hey guys, I am stuck in a bit of weird situation.

My Indian Passport was stolen with my bag and the incident was already reported to Police and Consulate with a report shared in November 2025. The police also found the passport and returned to embassy sometime in February 2026. Now my Indian Passport should have expired in April 2026 as well.

Now I became a Canadian citizen in March 2026, and am planning to apply for a Canadian Passport, post which a Indian travel e-visa for my upcoming travel in June.

Post this trip, once back to Canada, I will apply for an OCI Card. So, what I want to know is I don’t physically have the passport, neither it is still valid, so should I still apply to get a surrender certificate at BLS international? For this to process without a passport, should I get a clearence certificate from Embassy or something? Personally it doesn’t make sense to surrender when I don’t even have it in hand and that I am citizen of a foreign country, I don’t know the procedure for this kind of scenario and I appreciate you guys spending time to give your thoughts.

Again sorry, this is more a question for Indian citizenship surrender, I don’t mean to hijack in Canadian citizenship thread but just trying to reach someone with similar experience or expertise. Thanks again!

For e-visa, you don't really need the surrender certificate. You need the surrender certificate only for OCI

And you can surrender it anytime within 3 years as long as you don't travel with that passport. When you go to India, use Canadian passport + e-visa.
