After IRCC receives PR application, it assigns a number to that application.
The file number starts with “XG”. This is considered a temporary application number. It confirms that IRCC has received the package and have created a file in the system.
After eligibility review and when processing formally begins, IRCC assigns a permanent application number. This number usually starts with “G” (without the X).
The applicant can use this number for all future correspondence regarding the PR application.
