Yes, they do NEED to control immigration. If Canada opened the borders to anyone and everyone, no restrictions, no rules, the country would be inundated with tens of millions of immigrants within a very short time. There would be no jobs for them, no housing, millions would go on welfare. The infrastructure, economy, social services, the health system, would all be crushed under the strain of that many new immigrants.

Canada has lots of space, and lots of small towns that are dying because of lack of population. Even our "big" cities are miniscule compared to world standards. Obvious importing a zillion people in a single day would be difficult and cause a bunch of problems. But Canada could certainly allow many times more people in that we do. I think restrictions on immigration are a very "20th century" kind of thinking. In the global economy when capital moves freely, it only causes extreme inequalities when people are restricted from moving freely as well. Yes changing the system would cause some bumps and bruises, but in the long term i see it as the only way forward into the next century. Free movement of people is the natural conclusion to globalization.

Steerpike, I kind of agree with you -- I still think there would have to be some restrictions -- but it would sure be interesting, and kind of liberating, to see the kind of mass free movement that the late 19th century had. It might even revolutionize the Canadian economy.

Immigration is a resource like any other. It has to be managed in order help drive the population and the economy. Canada can support billions or people....but only if the infrastructure can grow with the population. Too many low skilled people and you can upset the marketplace. Too many PhDs and you can devalue education.

I completely understand you missing your sisters. I miss mine too (and brothers, parents, grandparents, friends etc)... It can make you really depressed. I have found two things make me feel happier:

- Making new friends/aquaintances in Canada. They're not the same people as the ones I left behind, but it gives me a social context just to go out and do something like have coffee, or even work part-time where I see colleagues and other people. You can try finding a group of people with the same interests as you on www.meetup.com, for example. They may not immediately become your best friends, but you might feel like you have more of a life of your own if you go out and do things.

- Talking with family and friends on Facebook, Google or Skype, or through other phone apps such as WhatsApp or Vonage. It makes it feel like you are closer when you can see their faces on the screen and talk about everyday things, and exchange little text messages. Does your sister have a computer? If not, could you help her buy one? If that's impossible, maybe you can agree on a time every week when she goes to an internet café or borrows a computer so you can talk on Skype for a while. It helps!

if you can not live without your sisters, why you do not just stick to them, find another man in your country, so you can stick to them, why you have to come to Canada to live and said that you can not live without your family, how many sisters do you want to bring here, and how many another sisters, brothers your sister want to bring here, all the immigrants they do have to live here without their family, why cant you?

I guess so. But that was just on one race of people. And our government has since had to apologize several times officially and also pay reparations to the grandchildren of those people. I wonder why the money I have to pay to CIC isnt considered a "head tax"?

Globalization has been on the move since the 70's. In a hundred years or more when the 3rd world catches up to the 1st you will no longer have countries with their own sovereignty. There will be economic fiefdoms most likely managed by appointments of corporations.

We have always only been as free as we believe we are. When we lose unions we have lost whatever foothold we have to determine our freedom.
