Eligibility for provincial health coverage tends to depend on the status/residency of the parents, not the citizenship of the child. This prevents birth tourists from leeching off our system when they give birth and the child has complications.

In Ontario it's the residency requirement (5 months within 12 mnths starting immediately?) which matters for provincial health coverage, right? Is there a written rule based on what you are referring to regarding status/residency of parents? Would be helpful. Thanks!

1) Correct - children are not exempt from the danger to public health clause. These apply to everyone. If someone has TB for example, this needs to be cured before PR will be approved.
2) Any emergency care the baby requires immediately after birth (e.g. ICU) will not be covered by OHIP and is classified as related to the birth. If you search, you will find articles about parents being saddled with very high bills. Having said that, this is obviously extremely rare. Medical insurance to cover pregnancy related complications is available but must purchased before pregnancy.

2) I read some of these articles too, very scary! Is there somewhere to read about how they classify whats included in "birth" and not covered by the newborn baby's OHIP as you are mentioning? It's not really making sense to me. Also, what is rare, for a child to be admitted to ICU i.e. neonatal care or for the hospital to charge such high bills in this instance? I'm sorry if I'm asking too specific questions, I just need to make sure nothing's being left out with the presence of such huge risks.

Canuck, do you mean that cic would need to see proves that I have stayed 2 years of out of 5, in other words I wouldn't be able to sponsor until the 5 year mark has passed to show proofs that I stayed in Canada for at least 2 yrs? It is not enough with the intention and the fact that I'd move there in time to be able to meet the RO requirement?
I am worried about childcare particularly daycare which I heard was ridiculously expensive. I hope that even with a sponsorship that it'd be possible to apply for a price reduction for daycare for the child.

You don't need to wait for the 5 year mark. You need to have enough time left in the 5 years to be able to meet the RO.

Don't expect a price reduction for childcare.

Eligibility varies from province to province, hence why I said "tends to". Your best option is to just contact OHIP.

Just to clarify this point - daycare costs are the same regardless of the status of the child or parents. So the costs you are seeing will apply to you / your child. There's no discount.

OHIP residency requirement is 6out of 12 months plus other rules.

I sounds like you may be a single parent. You would need to have a plan to be able to pay for daycare and living costs. Your timeline is pretty tight if you are closer to 2 years since you said you landed 1-2years ago.

This question would be the dealbreaker for me, so it would be a tremendous help if you are able to clarify.

According to a born and bread canadian living in ontario there are discounts of daycare. However I don't know the details. Either way I distracted myself away from my original question

Yes timeline is tight which is why I need to make an informed decision about whether or not to move now or wait for it to become even tighter. I can worry about the later future "later", for now I need to worry about the "right now". By the way this is not a single parent issue

However, if you yourself don't have provincial health coverage at that time, your delivery charges will not be covered.
You don't have to worry about child's medical exam too much. That is the least of your concerns.

Coverage is not automatic everywhere, hence the massive bills that birth tourists face when their children end up being in the NICU after birth.

You have to be very low income and usually you are on a waiting list for quite some time because the demand for subsidized spots is much larger than the spots available. Perhaps you are referring to child benefit payments.

Thanks for your responds. I understand your point, however the questions I asked were general while specific, and not really related to my "personal" situation. I am asking about rules that would apply for anyone. But its important to mention that I would settle in Ontario, so its the rules for Ontario that I am looking at. I find that any more information about me would be irrelevant and even a distraction to the questions I am really asking. I feel that the information available online is not specific enough for someone in my situation.
