Wendy2,

As i am so close to PR i did not want to spend $150 to get open work permit. Also my wife won't be working until my daughter is 1 yr old.

I got SIN # starting with 9 and would be getting new one after PR. wife and kid won't get SIN #.

All 2 would get medical cards .

Ans I think school won't be a problem on work permit.

Sorry Wendy2 for not replying to your message as I was in transit to Calgary for past 2 weeks(had a long road trip).

For my LoS it was very fast as I was in contact with the officer even before I received the offer letter. After I emailed my offer letter the next day his assistant contacted me on phone to ask which consulate I wanted to get the work permit processed. They said they will post mail the letter of support in 2 days to me, employer and consulate. I requested them to send a fax to me. I received the fax copy in 2 days.

After receiving the fax i spent like a week preparing my application and then went personally to LA office to get work permit. Upon reaching there I came to know they need mandatory 3 days to process the permit. But they were very helpful and said they will phone me with the result as soon as it is processed. And they did. received the work permit the next day via express mail.

work permit was for 1 yr. wife and daughter on visitor visa. Cost 150+150.

landed in calgary on Nov 2nd via coutts.

left the border in exact 1 hr. not much questions asked as I was on work permit.

came to know that I can't sell or dispose my car for 1 yr from the day of landing or have to pay tax.

can drive with US license plate for 90 days.

let me know if u have any other questions.
Welcome to Calgary!

Guys,

felt like posting few few words of my stay in Canada

Had a great road trip driving cross country packing belonging and family in my old civic..

Modern day migration rather than the old belgaadi what we saw in movies

still exciting and a gr8 life event.

I had like three apartments from craigslist when i reached here (bad idea)

would strongly recommend everyone to plan to stay in motel for 2-3 days and explore
the city before finding place to stay. motel would run $100 a night for a cheap one.

My craigslist apartments did not work to my favour (i guess i can use u now)

got a decent 2 bed apartment in a decent location close to the LRT and all shopping places.

Rent 1300 + 150 for utility. This seem to be a norm here.

weather had been aweasome so far. AC weather in the morning but freezing in the nights. eagerly waiting for the

snow ppl had been scaring us about.

made 2- 3 trips to get house hold items to get household running.

cost me $1000 inital investment.

no furniture yet.

things are expensive as u know. food u can say 10-15% expensive. rest all way expensive.

had to pay a $ for shopping cart at superstore. big surprise
superstore has a indian aisle where u can get most indian food items. rarely u would need to run to indian store.

internet very good speed and almost same price.
cell phone got a deal with wind mobile. $25/month unlimited canada call.

my US vonage works fine here for long distance.

most expensive stuff so far filtered water $5/ 5 gallons (1.25 US)

banking with TD canada trust. free banking if i maintain $1000 balance every month.

lost lot of transaction fee for US dollar transfer fee

let me know if anyone has any questions

passport is on it's way back to me with the immigration visa

The journey is over.

My online status was changed this morning to decision made, and USPS tracking told me my passport is on it's way back to me.

Thank God it's over good luck to everyone.

I will land in Toronto or Montreal around Thanksgiving, and wrap it up.

Not sure when I will move to Canada yet. My life in NYC has been pretty good. We will see.

Thanks.
