Good Morning All,
I need some Suggestions, since today is tax day (April 30) Our tax return must be done and send my Midnight today . The Question I have is regarding my Marital Status. Since I’m sponsoring my wife from overseas , If change my status as married I believe the system is asking for spouse Sin number and some other information.
If I put single I don’t want this to effect my Sponsorship application . Should I wait for my wife to arrive to Canada to do my Taxes ?
Any suggestion ?

You need to request an ITIN for your spouse. See http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t1261/t1261e.pdf for the form.

Thank you,
Looking at this form im not quite sure if this what I need this form is for
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

You can apply if you do not have, and are not eligible to
obtain, a SIN but you need to provide an individual tax number
to the CRA. For example, this could occur if you are:
• an international student who either has to file or intends to
file a Canadian income tax return;

• a non-resident filing an application to waive or reduce
Canadian withholding tax;

• a non-resident disposing of taxable Canadian property; or

• a non-resident who has to file or intends to file a Canadian
income tax return

In My case my wife doesn't live in Canada and I was inquiring what should I put in my tax Return as Marital Status

I was just going through an online tax prep form and there is a place to check if your spouse is a non-resident. So I think you can file married, and still not enter income and sin number info for your spouse by checking that non-resident box.

Either way, don't worry about your tax filing status affecting your sponsorship application - CIC does not consider your tax filing status as proof of relationship. For example, in Canada a couple who lives together becomes common-law for tax purposes on the date a child of that union is born - regardless of how long they've lived together. But that tax filing status does not qualify them in any way as common-law partners for sponsorship purposes. They would have to have lived together for at least one year, regardless of a child.

So do what you have to do to file a valid return with CRA, and forget about CIC where this is concerned.

I was also in the same situation, you file under married. You don't need to worry because your spouse does not have a sin. You should then fill out the marital status change form from Revenue Canada, which you can download from their website, and include a letter indicating approx how much your spouse overseas makes and submit to Revenue Canada.

the lady who helps me do the taxes all the time wrote down the change in the marital status, hubby name, dob, place of residence and she put a - for the income...not his income and not 0 either...from what i understood if he is non-resident and never went to Canada no need to write anything his income...but 0 would not b correct either....i always sent the forms done by hand so not sure how it would work doing them online....but i find important to change the status as soon as it happens :)

My apologies, I read your post wrong. I thought you wife was already in Canada. My accountant had to have my husband's 2011 net income, and strictly told me that once he lands to get an SIN and that -I- will need some form of identification for the USA as well since my husband is from there and they need my income as well. Since your wife isn't Canadian, you may want to check with her tax system as well since she will still need to file taxes as a PR to her home country. :)

Well, maybe. The US and Eritrea are the only two countries that tax their expatriates, the last time I looked. Though that only comes into play after landing.

I totally understand. But might be best to check. And no, it comes into play when you get married. We had a lot of paperwork to do since he already filed as single and we had to go back and fix it. If they (being the tax people haha) find out that you were married and you filed single, they will ask you to pay back the overpayment. Depending on your financial situation if you'd be able to do that or not (Us, not really) But thought I'd share so that no one else has to go through all the paperwork and annoying phone calls :)
