    USD Banking

Nope. Cheques from US Dollar accounts in Canada still go through the Canadian system to be cashed. Most businesses would probably put up with it because they want money and have competition, but federal student loan agencies have no such concerns. Someone on the You Need a Budget forums...

    USD Banking

I just learned that FedLoan, the agency that is handling my US student loans, will only accept payment in US funds from a US bank. I can't even pay with a US credit card, much less a Canadian check. Cheque. (I'll get there eventually! :P ) I called BMO, and apparently their US dollar...

Landed today!!! We started out early yesterday morning, but by the time we got to Buffalo I was too sick to wait in line at the border. I changed our GPS to send us to the nearest hotel, and I spent the night in and out of the washroom. :-X :-X :-X It turned out to be around the corner from...

    getting Health card in Ontario

The relevant question is where will you be living, I believe. Health coverage is from your 'home' province. If your husband works in Alberta but you live in Ontario, I think you have to go by Ontario's rules.

New spouse sponsorship rules and questions

Not quite. CIC won't refuse your application if you don't have status, but if you do let your legal status lapse, the CBSA can and may have you deported, at which point an inland application gets dropped. There are ways to extend status beyond the 6 months for visitors; they gave me a visitor...

Medical Exam - When? / Spousal Outland Application

Yeah, make sure the DMP knows that you're trying to immigrate under the family class. The procedure is different for some of the other immigration types.

Probably the 29th, although possibly as early as the 27th. Unless the world ends on the 21st. :P

When do you get your OHIP #?

Thanks. It just feels like they should to be able to say OHIP covers A, B, and C so that's got a 3-month wait based on Ontario residency rules, but Dental covers X, Y, and Z so those claims are covered by virtue of being the spouse of an employee. I guess that's why 'should' is such a dirty...

When do you get your OHIP #?

I know there's a 3-month waiting period after landing before I'll be covered under OHIP. My husband gets dental and vision benefits from his job, but they won't add me to those policies until I have an OHIP number. Hooray for bureaucracy, I guess. Will they tell me what my OHIP number will...

Thanks, all. Now to go back to waiting impatiently for the COPR.

B4 when most stuff is already in Canada

I've been living in Canada as a visitor while waiting out the PR process since August. When I arrived, I brought all my clothes, books, DVDs, video games and consoles, the cat's stuff, and a whole bunch of knitting stuff. How do I handle that when I land? List it on the B4, but tell them it's...

If I got my PPR on November 3 and sent in the copies on November 5, is it more likely that my file got transferred to LA or stayed in Ottawa until the 27th?

They live near DC, so it'd be a hell of a drive. Although I did just establish that it'd be about $200 to just not leave the airport and get back on a plane, if they bring the COPR with them when they pick me up. :-\

Ugh. I'm now wishing my husband had moved to BC before I met him instead of staying in Ontario. At some point in the past month (I stopped checking regularly after PPR), my status changed to DM. My mailing address is my parents' house, though, and I have a sick feeling in my gut that they've...

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D PPR! I sat down to take a break from helping my BIL move and checked my email. I was not expecting to see a PPR email, but there it was. Quite a disruption to the moving process as I called my family to let them know-- after jumping up and down and squealing and hugging my...

    US outland applicants' thread :)

I just did this a couple weeks ago, except I graduated rather than quitting a job. There's no way we could afford two apartments on just my husband's salary, so I gave them my parents' house as my US address. I also bought a plane ticket home for Christmas beforehand, because that's about the...

Woo, sponsorship approval! It looks like my file was transferred to Ottawa on the 13th. :D Now the real wait begins.

TIPS - Best ways to keep in touch with spouse while waiting

We also like to use Google Hangout sometimes. Since many of his friends are going to be my friends once I move in with him, getting to video chat with my husband plus some of his friends helps that process along. We've also done Google hangout with him, my family, and me.
