Hi, I'm looking for more information on getting an open work permit in Canada while waiting for my permanent resident visa. On the CIC it says open work permit is an option if you are a temporary resident for 6 months. I have a question I'm hoping I can get answered.

As a US citizen you don't have to have a visa to be in Canada for up to 6 months. What documentation would I require to apply for the open work permit and do I have to stay in Canada for the entire 6 months or can I leave for a couple weeks and come back without having to reset the 6 month period?

Thank you so much!

Hi

No, the website does not say an OWP is an option if a person is a temporary resident for 6 months. It states that if a person has a Temporary Resident PERMIT that is valid for more than 6 months, they can apply for an OWP. A TRP is a special permit that allows people who are otherwise inadmissible to come to Canada.
