Exporting/Importing Vehicle - US to Canada ONLY!

I called the detroit border for a similar situation and he said you can bring the car from Canada, and just turn around and export/import and go back to canada. Nothing about car needing to be in the US for 72 hours, just the paperwork needs to be emailed/faxed 72 hours prior.

Im still confused about that though because everywhere i read, it says otherwise.

You believe what you want to believe, rules dictate that the vehicle remain on State side at least 72hrs. Paperwork needs to be mailed 72 hrs ahead of time but also stipulates vehicle remain there as well. That being said you could just say the vehicle indeed has been in the states for 72 hrs if they ask, don't think they check or care. However, if they ask ( they may not),has it remained in the states for 72 hours and if your answer is "No" then they will simply ask you to come back because at that point they would be doing something out of procedure.

That's strange to me. Each border might do it differently though. I would assume the people at the border you're crossing should know their policy though. I might call back again to that border and verify with someone else, and make sure you get their name. That way if there is an issue you can say "I called at X time and spoke to Y and they said Z" type of thing.

That's actually exactly what I did. I called the border, the officer told me the same thing, so I kept my car with me in Canada. After the 72 hours, I crossed to the US, and went to speak with the officers to complete export process, no problems. I'm not saying anyone else should do that, but that was my personal experience exporting my car.

You are correct, nowhere here it says that. Like i said tread with caution, i am no expert. I perhaps misspoke based on my recent experience using several resources to gather my information, broker website ( simplified trading), cbp, riv, etc. Fact is it wasn't a concern for me since i was driving from US so i didn't pay close attention.

Given the age, and the following regulation, does it still need to be modified for daytime running lights?

IMPORTATION OF VEHICLES (15) YEARS OLD OR OLDER AND BUSES MANUFACTURED BEFORE JANUARY 1, 1971 - Vehicles fifteen (15) years old or older, as determined by the month and year of manufacture, and buses manufactured before January 1, 1971, are no longer regulated under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act by virtue of their age. While Transport Canada does not regulate the importation of these vehicles, it does not preclude the vehicles from having to meet provincial/territorial safety and licensing requirements. Importers of such vehicles are required to complete a Vehicle Import Form 1, at the time of importation, and present proof of ownership. Also, please contact the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) for clearance requirements.

How about Mercedes GLK (made in Bremen for USA) - the main speedometer scale is in mph, but central digital display can be switched from mph to kmh back and forth?

We’re you able to confirm if you need to change the cluster? I have a similar car where the analog speedo shows only mph but the digital display can be updated to show KPH.

LOL.. looks like we'll be finding out about this pretty much together. Crossing in late June, early July. I've been trying to reach 'stealerships' across the border, no one wants to give me a straight answer as to what needs to be modified/changed.

You have not settled down in Canada yet and were visiting Canada only for short trips so you are entitled to move your goods to Canada duty free. However, since so much time has lapsed since your soft landing and you have made several trips to Canada after that, you might need to prove it to CBSA that this is the first time you are "actually" moving to Canada to establish a residence for more than 12 months ( hence a first time settler). If I was in your situation then I would:

1. Take Print out of following web page with point 9 and 10 highlighted with a marker

2. Drop an email to CBSA at contact@cbsa.gc.ca explaining your situation. They might revert back with a generic reply but still take print out of reply from CBSA. This will indicate CBSA agents at POE that you have done proper research on this.

This worked pretty well. I showed the email reply from CBSA to the border agent and they did consider me a "Settler". I was able to import my car duty free, and submit a goods to follow list as well (even though I did not submitted goods to follow list at the time of landing in 2015).

Anyone here tried to import an RV from the states when land or actually move? mine was a Dodge 2000 roadtrek 1900 Versatile. had it for a few years now Texas title and sticker. wondering if anyone has the same experience.

Hey all, quick question:

I will be importing my car which is over fifteen years old, and therefore exempt from the RIV process – does this mean I do not need a Form 1? What paperwork should I be bringing for this process.

So far I have:
Title
Bill of Sale
Export paperwork / ITN
Passport / PR card


Am I missing anything? I was assuming I would need Form 1 for the CBSA but now I am unsure since my vehicle is exempt.

Hello all,
I am a US citizen with a canadian perm rez, moving to Canada for the first time in one week. I am trying to import my vehicle into Canada and starting the process.
First question- can I pull this off in one week?
Second question- how do I import my vehicle without a title? I do not yet have the title because I just paid off the vehicle and have not received the title in the mail yet.
I spoke to Canadian customs border people and when I explained my situation they said it is not a problem to import without the title. I then spoke to US customs border and they said I cannot import the vehicle without the title. Additionally US customs also said they would not let me drive across the border and import my vehicle at a later date. Is that correct? I cannot drive across the border and import at a later date? Any info anyone can share i greatly appreciate it!

Could you share what you did eventually? I am facing similar situation. Thanks.
