I wanted to advise everyone of my experience since not a lot of people come back on the outcome. I was arrested for a DUI in Florida back in May of 2011 and got it reduced down to Wet Reckless (still considered almost the equivalent to a DUI in Canada) in January of 2012. I have a repositioning cruise booked from L.A. leaving 4/28 stopping in Victoria and ending in Vancouver next week and didn’t want any issues so I went ahead and filled out the TRP form back in February of this year. I had heard that it takes 4 to 6 months so I wasn’t really hopeful that I would get a response to my request and was thinking that I would have to take my chances.

I did not use an attorney and filled out the request myself. They received the TRP form on 2/19 and the L.A. consulate office finally emailed me on 3/12 saying that they had received it and put it into the queue. Again, I was not really hopeful that I would receive a response since I was leaving on 4/28. I was shocked to find an email yesterday 2 days before the cruise saying my TRP request was accepted. Below is what I sent to them originally:

- Application for Temporary Resident Permit
- 2 passport-sized photos
- Copy of passport bio-data page
- FBI certificate that only took a week to get. Had to go get my fingerprints at the local jail and then sent it overnight and had results emailed to me 1 day after they received it.
- Copy of court records including disposition
- Foreign and Canadian statutes
- Letter of what happened during the arrest (be honest)
- Letter of how I am rehabilitated
- Letter of Itinerary (Very important as they need to see travel confirmations of when you are entering and leaving Canada. Let them know that you will not be driving while in Canada)
- Copy of the 200 CAD fee that I paid

From reading previous posts in this thread, I really believe that they put the forms into an order based on when you are arriving into Canada. I have seen that another person received a response a couple of days before their trip just like me even though it wasn’t near the 4 - 6 month mark.

Good luck!

Thank you saintsfan!! I have submitted mine with everything except the FBI report since I was pressed for time and thought it would take 4 months to process. My trip is August 1st. So fingers crossed. I have also seen people on this thread have success without it as well. Thank you for sharing your experience.

This comes straight from the confirmation email as to what they need to see. Note no FBI paperwork is requested nor letters of recommendation from colleagues and I did not send either. They received my packet November 21 and I had my approval on April 22 - 5 months. Emails went unanswered so just be patient.

Please ensure that you have provided sufficient supporting documentation for your application by reviewing the following. If any relevant items are missing when your file is assessed, it could lead to the refusal of the application. For this reason it is advisable to obtain and submit any missing items. Please reference all correspondence with your file number:
  1. Fully completed and signed Application for Criminal Rehabilitation (form IMM1444). The form is available at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM1444E.pdf Mark section 2 “For Information Only” and write TRP at the top of first page.
  2. Personal statement describing the purpose of your trip to Canada. Please include your proposed dates of travel to Canada including length of stay.
  3. Documentary evidence supporting your statements regarding your purpose of travel to Canada. This can include an invitation letter from your host, information concerning your relationship with your host, etc.
  4. Copy of valid passport biographical/data page. If you are a U.S. permanent resident, please also provide a copy of your valid green card.
  5. 2 passport size photos
  6. Copy of each court judgment made against you which must clearly show the charge, the section of the law under which you were charged, the verdict and the sentence.
  7. Copy of any documents relating to sentence imposed, parole, probation or pardon; e.g. court records, judge’s comments (including recommendation concerning parole), probation or parole reports, certificate of rehabilitation, etc. These documents must clearly show when your sentence was completed.
  8. Processing fee

Thank you for you reply @paday2 !! Thats interesting because my email requested the FBI history report, so it may be a case by case basis in regards to that. Congratulations on getting approved. I am not holding my breath. I havent even emailed them for status or anything. I am just going to wait and see what happens. Thanks again for the information. Was your trip for tourism or something else?

Yes, basically you can take everything you submitted for your TRP with you to the border as the officer will evaluate it there on the spot and make a decision. The main things they will look for, based on my research not personal experience, is full resolution of your case(s) and why are you coming to Canada. Good luck!! I’m still waiting on my TRP as well.

I haven’t been waiting long at all. I submitted everything April 24th. I received an email on May 3rd confirming the receipt of my package. I have not emailed them or heard from them since. I have heard that they process based on travel dates so you should hear something as your travel date approaches. Maybe like a week before.

Update:
I submitted all documentation for TRP in November 2018. I emailed the email on the visa website and no response. I then emailed the email listed on this thread and received a response. My application was set for review early July ( my travel date is july 10) july 2 finally received an email application accepted!!!! I guess they review your file the month you plan to travel?

I submitted my TRP Application on April 25th. I received a conformation of receipt email on May 12th stating that my application was received in office on April 26th. I submitted all necessary documentation absent of the FBI background report and state background reports. This included court records, character letters from co-workers and others, and travel itinerary. I also added some legal documentation for the laws broken and the Canadian equivalent in their criminal code.

Application for Temporary Resident Permit
- 2 passport-sized photos
- Copy of passport bio-data page
- Copy of court records including disposition
- Foreign and Canadian statutes
- Letter of what happened during the arrest (be honest)
- Letter of how I am rehabilitated
- Letter of Itinerary
- Copy of the 200 CAD fee that I paid

I received my approval letter today July 29th (my travel date is Aug 1st). Also, this was not for a funeral, family issue, work, or emergency. The request was for a leisure trip. If you are in this situation there is some light at the end of the tunnel. You just need to do your due diligence and submit everything well in advance.

My situation:
1 DUI Conviction; 5 years ago since the offence (4 years since end of the sentence)
1 DUI Arrest No Conviction; 8 years ago since the offence (7 years since end of the sentence)

Has anyone been successfully Rehabilitated? (not just a TRP) I submitted by paperwork end of July (Its been 5 years since my completion of DUI sentence) I received an email back on August 1st saying my application has been placed in their processing queue. A bit different from the TRP which I have gotten before. Hoping to be rehabilitated to travel to and from canada on the reg. again. My wife and I have a wedding in January also so I'm hoping it will be accepted by then. Will update if i get anymore news.

Hi All!

I found this thread very helpful when I applied for a TRP so I wanted to share my timeline for anyone curious.

DUI from 2012 / I wasn't eligible for rehabilitation because my informal probation ended in 2015. No other criminal arrests/convictions.

TRP application arrived in the Los Angeles Consulate office on July 22

I did include FBI background check as well as state background checks, although the confirmation email I received with a document checklist only called for the FBI one. I had 3 letters of recommendation and a letter from the director of a place where I volunteer (to help support my claim that I'm rehabilitated). Additionally, my boyfriend wrote an impact statement because we are traveling for an engagement party/family reunion hosted by his brother in Canada (although neither my boyfriend or his brother are Canadian citizens). I made sure to include a copy of the party invitation as well as noting multiple times that I would not be driving at all during my stay.

Here is the table of contents I attached to the top of my application (don't forget to include 2 passport sized photos):

1-4--------------Document Checklists

5-8--------------Application for Criminal Rehabilitation- TRP For Information Only

9-----------------Residence History

10-11-----------Personal Statements

12---------------Receipt of Payment

13---------------FBI Background Check

14---------------State of xxxx Background Check

15---------------State of xxxx Background Check

16-25-----------Itinerary Information for Proposed Trip

26-28-----------Sentencing Document

29-33-----------Confirmation of Total Finished Case and Completion of Community Service

34----------------Total Fines that were paid

35-37-----------Mothers Against Drunk Driving Documentation

38-41-----------Drinking Driver Class AB541 Documentation

42-46-----------Letters of Recommendation

47---------------Resume

48---------------Copy of Passport

49---------------Copy of State Drivers License

50---------------Canadian Statute relating to my offense

Received an email on August 6th that my application was in the queue and that standard processing times are 4 months.

My departure flight is Sept 7th so I was very nervous and prepared to apply at the border but I got my approval email today (9/5). I really think that they batch applications by date of travel since they only had my application for 6.5 weeks.

Good luck to everyone applying!

i would just google fbi backround check And “your state” background check. The fbi one is very straight forward in terms of what you need to send them.

Where did you find the document checklist that you included in the beginning?
