Hi, I’m looking for some advice on applying for a TRP, as well as opinions on how likely it is that I might be approved.

For a bit of background info, I am from the UK and was convicted for drink driving (DUI) in July 2018. I was given an 18 month ban which ended in January 2020. I previously applied for an ETA in January 2025 and was denied due to the conviction, as I was deemed to be criminally inadmissible.

I understand that I can apply to be criminally rehabilitated once 5 years have passed since the end of the ban - so would now be eligible to apply for this. I intend to start the process immediately as I would like a permanent resolution to this. However, I understand that this can and will likely take up to 2 years for the process to be completed.

After searching the internet I found out about the option to apply for a TRP for a one-off specific visit and it is this that I’m hoping to apply for. The trip would be in September 2026, and the purpose of the trip is to attend a siblings wedding vow renewal. They were only actually married a couple of months back, so a vow renewal may seem strange, but there is a reason for this. They got married in Las Vegas (also visiting from the UK) and unfortunately my wife, daughter and I were involved in a serious hit and run incident which left us in ICU and we missed the wedding as well as the rest of the trip. Because of this, my sister has suggested the trip this September so we can all celebrate together. They were initially debating between LV and Banff for the wedding, so would like to do this in Banff and the whole wedding party would be returning. My mother has been diagnosed with a terminal illness - Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) - and I’m not sure how long we will have together so a trip like this would mean a lot to our family.

I appreciate that some may not consider this to be important or urgent, but I do understand that TRP’s are often granted on compassionate grounds for the purpose of attending a family event, and wanted to gauge the opinions of those more familiar with the system as to whether this might be an appropriate purpose?

I’m not sure if any of this matters or not but aside from the DUI I have a clean record and I have long since quit alcohol. The trip would be a single trip for 14 days in total.

If I were to apply, how long is the process likely to take? We have around 5 months until we would travel, but I don’t want to book anything until I know whether I would be admissible or not. What information would I need to provide as part of the application? Any other advice from those that have successfully applied for one?

Thanks in advance

You need a Canadian lawyer specializing in immigration and criminal law. There are not timelines for TRP and probably will not get approved in 5 months.
