Update: According to IRCC customer care, my new PR card was dispatched on October 27, 2025. However, they indicated that delivery via Canada Post may take approximately 4 to 6 weeks. I’m wondering, does it really take that long? I am based out of Montreal
[Update]- Card delivered today (3-Nov-2025).

You can travel outside Canada without one; you need the PR card to return. If you don't get it, you can apply for a PRTD or return via a land border (if you can travel through USA).
Hello, just to confirm we can return via land border with expired pr card...what documents would be required?

Your passport to confirm identity plus expired PR card to allow border officer to determine that you are a PR, basically. Other variations possible but if you have those two, that's the most straightforward. (With your UCI# - which is on the card but also elsewhere - they will look up your file and info).

You do not specify your situation - if you have submitted a PR renewal application, then having a copy of that is good (lets the officer determine that you are in compliance with the RO). Various other 'Canadian' docs (drivers licence, health card, even bank cards) can help them determine that you habitually live in Canada.

If you're out of compliance with the RO - you should have your explanation of why for H&C consideration / leniency. That's a whole separate tpic on which a whole lot written elsewhere.
