Big update for those who are waiting for PR under the protected persons status:
“Budget 2025 proposes a one-time initiative to recognise eligible Protected Persons in Canada as permanent residents over the next two years. This practical step is a reflection of the fact that the vast majority of these people cannot return to the country of their origin. It will also ensure that those in genuine need of Canada's protection have their permanent status recognized, accelerating their full integration into the Canadian society and their path to citizenship. The fiscal cost of this measure is $120.4 million over four years, starting in 2026-27. This represents the costs for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency to process the additional applications, which are partially offset by higher fee revenues.” In simple words, this one-time pathway will prioritizes and accelerates PR applications under the protected persons category as part of the initiative. Hopefully, all pending applications will be granted PR status directly without waiting for the normal processing time or queue. BIG WIN for everyone who are waiting!

Example 1: Person already applied and is stuck in the queue

• IRCC activates this one-time measure.
• IRCC pulls a list of in-Canada protected person PR files that meet some basic conditions. For example:
1. Applicant is in Canada.
2. Protection is still valid and not ceased.
3. No serious criminality or inadmissibility.
4. Application was received on or before a date IRCC will name.
(These are typical filters. I am inferring based on how they filter other backlogs.)
• Your file is in that list. Instead of waiting for the normal queue, IRCC issues the approval and generates ECOPR.
• You get your confirmation and then the PR card follows.
This is what people mean when they say it will “prioritize and accelerate.” The budget language supports this idea. It says the goal is to recognise status so people can integrate and move to citizenship faster.

Good news for everyone who still waiting

Yes, the update you shared about Budget 2025 is correct and good news for many. According to the budget documents, the government is introducing a one-time initiative to recognise eligible protected persons in Canada as permanent residents over the next two years.

Here are the key points and what this could mean for you and others in the “protected persons” category (eg. persons in Canada who have been determined to be in need of protection under Canadian law):

✅ What the budget says
• The budget mentions that many protected persons “cannot return to the country of their origin”, and so this is “a practical step” to allow eligible persons to have their permanent status recognised.
• It’s described as a one-time initiative over the next two years.

So all the haters who hang around on this website gate keeping and discouraging people can whines now.

We will be seeing them around again soon, spreading negativity. I sincerely hope the government grants PR status to Protected Persons immediately after their positive IRB decision. Compared to other PR categories, IRCC has treated us far too unfairly, and this delay has caused unnecessary hardship.

Yes i have almost lost my career track a year delayed. But this is good news for
Others since it looks and clearly says ircc that protected person cannot return their home so prioritize PR to become Citizen.

Friend,

I wrote a letter to my MP and to Immigration Minister Marc Miller to voice my support for reuniting refugee families.

While many will celebrate with their loved ones on February 17, huge delays in refugee family reunification will continue to prevent thousands of people across Canada from doing the same.

This Family Day, the CCR calls for urgent action to reunite refugee families.

Whether we were born here or came to Canada seeking refuge, we all want the same for our families: to have them safe and close by. This is true for particular reasons for refugees, who have experienced traumatic events and been forced to flee their homes. Even with refugee status in Canada, they can’t start rebuilding their lives when their spouse and children are far away, often themselves in precarious situations, perhaps in a war zone.

It is unconscionable that as a country we are making refugees wait more than 4 and a half years to be reunited with their immediate family, and this is after they have been accepted as refugees.

Canadians overwhelmingly support welcoming refugees and want better for our friends and neighbours waiting to be reunited with their families. Our government’s actions must reflect this support.

Can you join me and write a letter? Click here: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/this-family-day-lets-reunite-refugee-families?source=email&

Thanks!
Marc miller is not the minister lol

I applied for permanent residence in November 2022 in the province of Quebec. I recently moved to Ontario and updated my address through a webform. My application has been transferred from Quebec to Ontario, and I have received both Eligibility and Pre-arrival.

ASSESSMENTS
Eligibility: Passed
Security: Not Started
HIRV:
Criminality: Passed
Org Crime:
Medical: Passed - Expired
Misrepresentation:
Info Sharing: In Progress
Other Reqs:
Final:

I want to ask the security process starts only after the info sharing is completed what exactly is the info sharing about?

You just updated your address, or did they ask for some proof like a lease or driver’s licence?

That’s your idea that they should do this, or do any proof for this?

They could have resolved the issue much earlier, instead of causing people to wait for three years, separating families, and ruining lives! Now, they only want to clear the backlog and stop granting asylum.
