I wrote a letter to my MP and to Immigration Minister Marc Miller to voice my support for reuniting refugee families.

While many will celebrate with their loved ones on February 17, huge delays in refugee family reunification will continue to prevent thousands of people across Canada from doing the same.

This Family Day, the CCR calls for urgent action to reunite refugee families.

Whether we were born here or came to Canada seeking refuge, we all want the same for our families: to have them safe and close by. This is true for particular reasons for refugees, who have experienced traumatic events and been forced to flee their homes. Even with refugee status in Canada, they can’t start rebuilding their lives when their spouse and children are far away, often themselves in precarious situations, perhaps in a war zone.

It is unconscionable that as a country we are making refugees wait more than 4 and a half years to be reunited with their immediate family, and this is after they have been accepted as refugees.

Canadians overwhelmingly support welcoming refugees and want better for our friends and neighbours waiting to be reunited with their families. Our government’s actions must reflect this support.

I applied for permanent residence in November 2022 in the province of Quebec. I recently moved to Ontario and updated my address through a webform. My application has been transferred from Quebec to Ontario, and I have received both Eligibility and Pre-arrival.

I want to ask the security process starts only after the info sharing is completed what exactly is the info sharing about?

Big update for those who are waiting for PR under the protected persons status:
“Budget 2025 proposes a one-time initiative to recognise eligible Protected Persons in Canada as permanent residents over the next two years. This practical step is a reflection of the fact that the vast majority of these people cannot return to the country of their origin. It will also ensure that those in genuine need of Canada's protection have their permanent status recognized, accelerating their full integration into the Canadian society and their path to citizenship. The fiscal cost of this measure is $120.4 million over four years, starting in 2026-27. This represents the costs for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency to process the additional applications, which are partially offset by higher fee revenues.” In simple words, this one-time pathway will prioritizes and accelerates PR applications under the protected persons category as part of the initiative. Hopefully, all pending applications will be granted PR status directly without waiting for the normal processing time or queue. BIG WIN for everyone who are waiting!

Looks like they might be planning a one-time move to grant Protected Persons permanent residency without counting them under the regular immigration levels plan. But the total number of spots for Refugees, Protected Persons, H&C, and “Other” categories is only 56,200, and there’s already a huge backlog of files waiting for final decisions. If they really start processing faster, that number definitely won’t be enough. They’ll have to add extra spots. Also, it's somewhat interesting that they didn’t share a breakdown for each category, which feels like they’re keeping those details vague on purpose.

Thanks. But the announcement numbers are not aligned with the 115,000 initiative. So, 2 questions here:

1. Is the initiative for 115,000 protected persons has a different quota?

2. Are protected people in Quebec included in this initiative?

Its just a increase of 2000 from last year..2025 it was 18000 now it's 20000..

According to the updated plan which announced today, the government will grant PR to 115,000 protected persons in Canada within 2 years. So, we are talking about 58000 people per year. So, the 20,000-per-year limit will not apply in this case.
