After pushing my MP's office a little more, I finally got an answer on the status of our application:

Basically she said that she has gotten the CIC to "[bring] forward" our file and they are about to start on the background checks which she says could take a few months to a year.

Has anybody else had that?

So, it's been over a year now officially since our application began being processed. Fingers crossed we'll be able to go by February.

Also, can anybody give me some insight as to what the process is if my wife came with me to Canada before her application is finished? What would she have to do if she gets the green light while she's in Canada?

When she comes to Canada as a visitor, you can change the address with CIC to your Canadian address. So when her application is approved they will mail her COPR directly to your address in Canada, and you can do the PR landing at the closest USA land border.

Thanks Rob! So basically, the COPR comes and we go to Immigration at the US border and they handle it there.

how detailed were you with the B4 forms and how picky was CBSA?

My wife and I are mainly just going to be bringing clothes and some kitchen stuff (plates/pans/glasses/spoons/etc) in.

Hi Everyone,

I am almost done putting the application together. The final task is getting the Korean documents translated and notorized. Can anyone recommend a place in Seoul? Thanks.

can't remember the one my wife used, but there are a lot. Just get your spouse to phone 4 or 5 of them and get a quote and choose whichever one makes you guys happy.

Actually, I didn't bring the B4 form. I just brought the list the moving company prepared when they packed us up. The CBSA agent completed the B4 form for me. They weren't picky at all. The moving company's descriptions were really general. If I were you I'd describe your stuff as either "Clothing" or "Kitchen Items" and I think you'll be fine. You'll need to indicate a dollar value for the total contents of each box. This doesn't need to be especially accurate either. A ballpark figure is okay.

On another note, I got a letter from CIC Vegereville yesterday. They extended my wife's visitor's visa for another year notwithstanding my letter of September 12th telling them she had a DUI and that I wanted to withdraw the extension application. Jeez, I guess the guy in the mail room was on vacation all of September, lol.

Yes. You go to US immigration first only because technically you need to be entering Canada from another country. So then you turn around and actually do the PR landing at the Canadian immigration office.

Get a 1+1 deal where lawyers office has a translator on staff or is in partnership with one.

Today is shipping day. The company is here packing up our stuff, we ended choosing the 3 cubic metres option, which is going to end up being about 6 cubic metres. The cost for us is going to be about 2 million won. But it is worth it, just to see a guy in a 3 piece business suit packing up my stuff.

CanNZ,

how much stuff did you fit in the 3 cubic meters option. We are thinking of shipping things back as well but still aren't sure if it's worth it. The last time my wife asked for a quote from Korea to Calgary, it was close to 2million for about a 2 kimchi fridge size container. What kind of stuff are you shipping back?

A lot, but we will need to use a couple more metres. Mostly just clothes and photos, and a set of golf clubs.

This sort of makes me feel good that my wife and I don't have much to take with us. Whatever we have can fit in small boxes and be set in spurts.

We actually sent 6 boxes of clothes before this too. So all that plus having to pay for these boxes to be x rayed in Canada, our total shipping costs will be around 3 mil. won.
