Since our wives come from a VISA exempt country, aren't we skipping the PPR part?

For some reason I thought we would still have to submit the passport. No? If no, will we just get the COPR via email as the next/final step?

Out of curiousity, if we move to Canada early, can our wives do volunteer work?

You bet. I think its a great way to transition. I did this myself in Korea. IMO volunteering would be a productive way for pr applicants to ease into Canada social/work life. My wife plans to volunteer right away. Even better if it relates to employment interests.

Where did you read that she can volunteer? If my wife can, she wants to do that immediately too.

It only states in PR rules that one cannot be employed until PR. In addition one can study in a 6 month or less program.

Yes she can volunteer, but the definition of volunteer is pretty broad. There are certain types of volunteer positions (mostly unpaid internship type positions, or doing any work that other people could usually be paid for) that do require work permits/SIN, and others that don't.

So encourage her to look around for volunteer work, but make sure first question asked is if a work permit/SIN is required.

You can read a bit more here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/fw/fw01-eng.pdf

I'm sure there are many volunteer positions that are acceptable for those waiting on PR.
Will be a non-issue for us since we wait here til PR is complete.

Volunteering without status in Canada is not allowed in certain circumstances. It is still technically Canadian before non-Canadian (the same as finding work). If you can find a volunteering position that cannot be filled by a Canadian then that is fine.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/work-volunteer.asp

I would just be careful about where you volunteer, ensuring that it is not something that could be payed for.

We sent our application to Mississauga (when the VO was still open in Seoul) and it was sent back there for processing after sponsorship was approved. Seoul then asked for a Criminal Record Check - FOR ME (likely knowing that it would take five months for them the CRC to be done and knowing that they'd be closing and be able to forward our application on to Manila, so said the guy I spoke to at CIC) and it did take 5 months for the CRC but then the RCMP thought they were doing me a favour by sending the CRC to Seoul rather than to me, so I had to go and get it and send to Manila myself. Hence, still waiting. The last official communication we had with any embassy was when they asked for additional documents back in August 2012. Then, off an on, we've emailed asking for updates and have occasionally got an answer.

No idea when it's going to be done.
Rob will know a lot more than me on this, but I'm wondering if you should be requesting your GCMS notes. It's been 17 months since you submitted your application and over a year since you got your additional document request. There's something odd going on with your application and the notes may give you better insight into exactly what CIC is doing.

Ya I would request the GCMS notes at a minimum. However I would even go beyond that and contact my MP as in this particular case there was clearly a huge error involved on the part of CIC. In no cases do they ever require the SPONSOR to get their own criminal check. I think the VO here made a procedural mistake and was the main reason for all this delay.

With this info in hand hopefully your MP can push something through Manila.

I'm gonna keep applying for jobs. If I can secure one from here then we go before PR. If not then wait for PR here. The chances of securing employment from here are slim to none but worth trying.

Thanks for the advice guys! Who would I contact to get the GCMS notes?

I've already been in touch with the MP's office and basically they said there's nothing they can or will do right now because our file is still within the 14 month processing time. I told them that the CIC admitted and told me that had Seoul VO not requested the CRC, our application would have been done at Seoul VO and issued in January 2013.

Any thoughts?
