I am eligible right away, my previous card was still valid based on my work permit for 1 month, I don't know if that played and important role or not, but now I am PARANOID AS HELL that I will get in trouble for using OHIP before I was supposed to... But then again it wasn't my fault, it was that lady's fault... I hate ppl who don't know their job...
If you have a valid health card in ontario, after you land you are eligible to get OHIP right away. There is no 3 month wait. The lady who helped me with the process said although when they first put the information into the system it by default puts you in 3 month waiting period. Then they make some changes which starts your coverage right away.

I looked up the law regarding the regulations and it does not say anything about previously covered OHIP residents.

It is indeed a gray zone ???

That could very well be true! Could be that not all ServiceOntario staff do this :/

Case in point, I have the 3 month period but was covered by OHIP on my PGWP.

OHIP is a 3 month wait from the time you are eligible.

If you remain in Ontario and have a valid work permit while processing your PR, you are most times also eligible for OHIP.

The 3 month wait period is mandatory wait for any new resident. That is irrespective of whether one lived in Canada before or not. Check the document that was given to you. You will see a date, maybe in your case October 12 from when OHIP starts. In my case I had OHIP before which became inactive the date I landed and it starts again on October 10th.

I had a valid OHIP with my work permit when I landed. When I went to update my status as a PR, my health card number changed and the "issue date" was set to a month from that date. The employee who issued me the new number punched a hole in my existing health card and said I will receive my new card within 4 weeks. She said I can keep using my old card (with hole punched) in conjunction with my newly issued temporary paper health card in the meantime. I have used the old card multiple times in these 4 weeks before I got my new card without any issues. The old card was valid till I got my new card a month later.

hmm...not sure what happened there but your health card # remains the same and they just change the code on the same number....

That's what they did for me...I know they take the card back or punch hole or something that's why I didn't even take my card with me and I told the lady it is at home...

Hi 7799,

Nope, still waiting for it. Call centre agents said I will be contacted by the local CIC office requesting new photographs. I haven't received any calls or mail from them yet. When I called back again, they told me to wait till Aug 18 and if I don't receive anything by that date, then I have to call them again and that's only when they can take any further action. This is extremely frustrating given that I have been waiting for 90+ days when the current processing time is 28 days.

Did you land in Rainbow Bridge?

Hi dbss,

You are correct, they only change the version code (last two letters on the card) and the expiry date.

I also landed in Rainbow Bridge on April 5th. My family got PR cards mid-july. When I called CIC they are saying that I will be contacted to come to their Hamilton office for photographs. This is going on since mid-july but didn't receive any communication till now.:-(

Landed at Rainbow Bridge on 9-Aug-2014. Now, the wait begins for PR card. The officer said I shall get it within 6-8 weeks.
