Hi all, my COPR expires in January and I currently have a work contract in the US running until March 2027 (breaking it costs a significant penalty, so I need to finish it). My plan is to do a soft landing before the COPR expiry, then return to the US to complete the contract, then move to Canada permanently around October 2027.
A few questions for anyone who’s done this recently (ideally 2025/2026):
Any recent firsthand experience would be really helpful trying to get this right since both my PR status and the work contract are riding on the timing. Thanks in advance!

- At the port of entry, if I give a friend’s Canadian address for PR card delivery, has anyone had the officer accept vs. decline this once you mention you’re not staying permanently right away? What happened in your case?
- If the officer declines to start card processing, did you just get an Address Notification form (IMM 5456) to submit later? How did that process go once you actually settled? And what happens if I am unable to provide Canadian address within 6 months ?
- If I don’t have the PR card by the time I move for good, has anyone dealt with getting a PRTD to fly back in, vs. just driving across a land border instead to avoid needing the card?
- Any issues at CBSA when re-entering the US shortly after a soft landing, or is this a total non-event on that side?
