Hi I was wondering if someone could provide some insight...

I received a notice to send in some paper work to complete my file. On it they advised to send it to "the address below". The address below was an email address. Has anyone else experienced this? and if so I assume that sending it to the email address is the correct step to take?

I had that same issue. It told me address bellow but I had no address below, not even an email address. I decided to call the call centre (in French - they're so much nicer!) and the agent gave me the correct address to send over the paperwork.

Thanks it wasn't too clear. they seemed to be indicating that it should go to the email address but you never know. Ill be giving them a call tomorrow.

Cheers!

Thank you! I can apply for SIN and OHIP using copr, right?
Yes COPR/Proof of Landing/Status all work for SIN + OHIP. OHIP you will also need a proof of address.

I landed yesterday! Flew in from California to Ottawa...the only thing that made it take longer than I thought it would was that a couple of other international flights came in at the same time so I had to wait awhile to get through customs since they only had one agent on duty doing secondary checks. Once the line started getting long, they added a couple more. But it was all super easy! Hurray!!!!!!

My goods to follow will probably take a couple of weeks to get here, but that too should be smooth (I hope!).

Hey all,

Does anyone know if you can register for an OHIP number early in Ontario before the 3-month mark post-landing? (Just get the OHIP number, not necessarily have the coverage begin.)

My OHIP should kick in at the end of this month according to my landing date. I just wanted to know if I can go in early prior to then and get everything rolling.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

I have a question regarding filing a tax return. I apologize if this is not the right place for this question.

Do I need to file the tax return since I did not work in 2015 neither in US nor Canada? An H&R block agent told me I didn't need to since I didn't work in 2015. I want to make sure if it's the case.

Any answer or any advice on where I should be looking for the answer would be appreciated. (I became PR 6 months ago)

Thank you!

I have always been told that a US citizen should always file a tax return with the IRS even if they had no income to report, and to continue to do so even when living in a different country.

On the Canadian side, you can file a form that basically asks the government whether or not you are considered a Canadian resident for tax purposes. I've sent one in for my wife who spent ten months in the US in 2015 but haven't had a response yet. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/nnrsdnts/cmmn/rsdncy-eng.html

I did the same thing. When did you send yours? I was starting to worry that I may have made a mistake. I mailed the form back in November.

So we will need to file for taxes in the US when my hubby is living and working here in Canada? How does that work? Does he get double taxed? Is there any website that explains it? I thought you had to file in the US only if you made more than 100k a year so I'm confused.

I know you can apply for the OHIP within the 3 months and it just doesn't take affect until the 3mo

Hey all, I'm back! :) It's great to see so many of you further along or done with this process! I am finally landing in Kelowna next Monday - on BC's Family Day! I am traveling back to the US in March for a short weekend visit and coming back to Canada by commercial plane, but I will not have my PR card yet, as it will have only been a month or so since I landed. I understand that I need to show my PR card when returning to Canada.

Can anyone advise how to travel back to Canada without my PR card? Technically I can always show my US Passport and then explain my situation at the border, but I understand that's not the *right* way to do it, and I would rather avoid any potential hassle.

Thanks in advance for your input! :D

EDIT: I realize that CIC's website advises to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document once I am outside of Canada. Since I will be outside of Canada for a total of 2 days (and nowhere near a VAC), how would I even receive a PRTD in time for my return flight to Canada?

Hi, good to hear from you! :D When I crossed the border, I had no issues just showing them my COPR and explaining I'm a PR when they asked my Canadian status.
