Talk to your lawyer or representative if you've used one to apply, or call/email CIC and check with them.
If you can log in to ECAS you're all good and if you don't need to apply for the BOWP you don't need your filenumber anyway.

Talking about leaving the country for some duration:

I called up CIC, and the lady at the other end mentioned that I could re-enter at any time provided I have a valid visa. Is there really no time limit as to how long we can remain outside the country?

That however is not a problem for me, as I have a Work Visa valid until July next year. In my peculiar situation the work visa validity was greater than the validity of my WP.

Generally, as far as I have seen, Work Visas and WPs expire on the same date.

Yes, Work Visas and WPs expire on the same date. May be It is a CIC mistake, they gave you expiring dates different.
You can re-enter into Canada at any time if you have a valid WP and Visa. There is no time limit upon your stay outside of Canada.
