Hello

I claimed asylum in 2025 due to the war back home. My process was quick. I got brown papers, medical check and work permits quickly after my claims. After that, my case was referred quickly too. I can see that status "Confirmation of referral" in my portal.

After a year, now 2026, I checked my application status at the portal. It saying that my background check has been completed. It took a year to process for background checks.

My question is:

- When I will get hearing date or no hearings at all (some cases - I heard they skipped this coz they are straightforward and less complex)?

I am waiting to get protected person status and apply for travel document from Canada. Because my current passport is going to expire in 2028. I cant renew even I left from canada and drop my asylum case. My origin country doesnt renew anyone who is within the military age range.

I worried if IRCC will take another many years to proceed. I will be stuck here and I cant out from canada for emergency reasons/trips etc.

You should avoid leaving Canada if you are not a protected person for any reason unless you’d be happy abandoning your asylum claim. Realistically there’s a huge backlog so processing may take a year or two even for less complex cases.

dang. thats too long. yes i wouldn't leave Canada until i get protected person status.

But what if asylum claimants have to travel for emergency cases like aging parents need urgent care, very important cases in some countries etc?

buddy you cant travel out for any reason till you get protected person status and travel document. Not to be negative but take your mind off it and focus on intergating with the Canadian culture and life.In my case it took over 2.5 years to get a hearing which was in 4 months so total 2 years 9 months. There is a Massive backlog of claims.

you better abandon your claim if you cant be patient in order to travel because its a long journey . not to discourage you but to tell you things as they are
