Not sure how this is related to the election. Either winner would have had to take action and likely very similar action. Non-partisan bureaucrats make up the majority of IRCC.

• (a) do not apply to a claim for refugee protection made before the day on which a Bill entitled An Act respecting certain measures relating to the security of the border between Canada and the United States and respecting other related security measures is introduced in the 1st session of the 45th Parliament; and
• (b) apply to a claim for refugee protection made during the period beginning on the day on which that Bill is introduced and ending on the day before the day on which it receives royal assent.

I would still expect that some action will be taken to address the backlog of cases. The volume of cases in the backlog is not manageable given current processing methods. The focus on minimizing the number of new cases is more urgent so it makes sense to focus on this first.

Not necessarily. The majority of Canada and conservatives in Canada are more centrist. PP was not calling for a ban on asylum seekers. If anything some of the statements from PP were more moderate than Carney. If anything government lawyers likely had the most input on what changes could be proposed anticipating legal challenges

To be fair this plan likely was started under Marc Miller who suggested around last November to expect an announcement regarding asylum but sadly December came and went with no announcement. Then proroguing happened so there was no opportunity for changes and the election. These things don’t happen quickly. Unfortunate that it wasn’t in place last fall.

I don’t think this proposal should be passed. Anything can happen anytime. Situation can change anytime . For someone declared wanted in home country more than a year living in canada , where does that person stands.

If the govt was really concerned and wanted to clean the house, they will process the 280k pending asylum claims first by pausing any new claims and allocating proper resources.

The integrity of the immigration system has been compromised for a long long time but the govt analysts and policy makers are least concerned until it becomes priority for law makers. For starters, the majority of current asylum claims are from a country which is generally stable and is not at war.

Imo, these "proposed" changes will remain "proposed" until next election.

There already is a triage for less complex cases. There needs to be more triage of applicants for both very high chances of approval and very high chances of rejection.

These changes have been in the pipeline before Trump got elected. It would be very difficult and against treaties we have signed to pause all new asylum claims. Previous government wanted to prioritize being viewed as a top humanitarian country but even they had felt the pressure to get immigration and asylum under control. Changes in government come slowly but the government has to anticipate they will be sued do have to craft these bills carefully. There is tightening of asylum programs worldwide. There are certainly some parts of the bill that are due to pressure from the US but things like cracking down on money laundering is something we should welcome. Out of pure necessity there needs to be changes to the asylum program and think LPC will hopefully be able to find a few ministers to join them which is likely the bigger challenge along with court challenges.
