Re-entry with expired PR, waiting for new card

Hi all!
My husband has been living in Canada as a PR for the past 4 years. We will be driving to the USA by car for a wedding, but he only realized his pr card was expiring in March. Right away he applied for a renewal ,but seeing as on the website they are still working on pr cards received in January, we don't think he'll get his new card in time for the wedding in June.
Will he have trouble re-entering Canada? If not, what documents will he need to ensure he is re-admitted into Canada? I'm having trouble finding this information.

Does he still have his expired card or original COPR either of which given you are travelling by car he could show to CBSA even though they might give some grief about it that should be enough for them to see he is a PR.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, he has both. Is there any chance they might turn him away? We're just nervous because it would be a total disaster if he can't return to work.

There is no chance that they will turn him away. He is a PR and has the right of entry to Canada.
