Please advise if I can renew my passport before study permit expires and then apply for an extension as my course would still have one more year

Yes.
Your old passport will be given back to you as cancelled/expired.
All visas on a cancelled (Indian) passport are valid until visa expiry date.
You can travel with the visa on a cancelled/expired passport.

Thank you for the response.

Basically I'm a Pakistani national. My study permit expires one day before my passport expires and my program would have still one year left to complete.

I was wondering if I can first get my passport renewed which would take approximately 2 weeks and then apply for the extension.

P.S *MY MISTAKE, I SHOULD HAVE RENEWED IT BEFORE APPLYING FOR STUDY PERMIT FOR 10 YEARS INSTEAD OF 5.
