Subject: Travel Outside Canada While Study Permit Extension Is in Process – Need Clarification
Hi everyone,
I’m currently in Canada on a valid study permit and TRV, both expiring at the end of July 2025. I’m actively enrolled and maintaining my status.
In mid-March 2025, I applied for a study permit extension, and it’s still under process. I’m planning to travel outside Canada from June 20 to July 13, 2025, and I’d really appreciate your insights on a few questions before finalizing my travel:
1. Can I re-enter Canada while my study permit extension is still in process, if I return around 15–17 days before my study permit and TRV expires? Will CBSA officers raise any issues or concerns in this situation?
2. If my study permit extension is approved while I’m outside Canada, is that okay? Will it affect my re-entry in any way, or is it fine to return with the approved permit and valid current TRV? even though I was not in Canada at the time of approval?
3. If my study permit extension is approved while I’m outside, can I apply for a new TRV from outside Canada, or does it have to be done from within Canada?
4. If I receive my new study permit while I’m outside Canada, can I still return using my current TRV, even though it was issued based on my old permit? Once I’m back, can I then apply for a new TRV?
5. If my study permit extension gets approved just a few days before I travel (e.g., around June 15), and I don’t have enough time to apply for a new TRV before leaving, is it okay to travel with my current TRV and apply for a new one after I return?
Thanks in advance for your help and guidance!
