Lawyers often have a sixth sense about these things. My thought is that he probably wasn’t completely comfortable with how a few of your responses came across and didn’t want to risk an on-the-spot decision. By doing this, he’s giving the board member more time and additional evidence to support your claim.
If you can, try reaching out to get his opinion on how the hearing went and what extra submissions he plans to make.
In my case, my hearing lasted about three hours. Afterward, the board member told my counsel not to ask any further questions. My lawyer said that was a good sign—because my responses were consistent, honest, and based on genuine personal experiences and 4 months later, I received a positive Notice of Decision.
