Here’s how to handle that situation in IMM 5709 (Application to Change Conditions, Extend Stay, or Remain in Canada as a Student), under the “Current Country of Residence” section:@ Miss Bee, please help me in answering the following questions:
In the form IMM 5709 under “Current Country of Residence” section, what date should be entered under the “To” field if the existing study permit has expired, but the applicant is currently under maintained status? The previous study permit was for secondary education, and a new application is now being submitted for undergraduate studies.
Should the “To” date field be left blank, or should we enter the date on which the previous study permit expired?
Thank you for your guidance.
If your previous study permit has expired and you are under maintained status (formerly implied status):
For the “To” date in the “Current Country of Residence” section, enter the expiration date of your previous study permit.
- Do not leave it blank.
Why?
Even though you’re under maintained status and can continue studying/working as per your previous conditions, your last official immigration document (the expired study permit) ended on that date. The maintained status itself is not a separate “permit” with its own expiry date—it simply allows you to stay under the same conditions until a decision is made.
Example:From: The date you became a resident in Canada (e.g., arrival date).
- To: The expiration date of the previous study permit (e.g., 2024-08-31 if that was when it expired).
