You likely won't be able to get it until at least after first-stage approval has been granted. That is, last I checked, some 8-9 months after application right now.

Of course, if you're in Alberta, apparently visitors qualify -- so it depends on the province. Where y'at?

When you say she is visiting you, I assume that you mean she will be with you until the application is completed.

thanks Baloo.
Yes she will stay with me for entire period. We are in Alberta
She applied for PR with work permit.
Does she have to apply for visitor extension as well to get medical cover?

I am a physician here in Alberta - she is not eligible for health care coverage in Alberta as a visitor. She has to have some legal status in Alberta - work visa, permanent residency etc. to be covered by health care. When you apply they will also ask for proof of residency in Alberta, such as a lease in her name, joint utility bills with her listed as well.

Hey Kaycee,

Not to be contrarian, but several people with nothing more than a visitor's record or stamp in their passport have gotten Alberta health coverage recently.

Try to apply: worst case scenario, they say no.

Kaycee: If one has visitor visa for 6 months or more, is eligible for Alberta Health Card. My wife did have health card but that is exiring with visa expiry.

Now, we ahve applied for inland PR and wonder if she would be eligible for Alberta health coverage or not?

There are several people whom applied inland and gotten healthcare coverage before AIP or PR status.
chau01, come on over to an inland thread and we can better help you out there. ;) I will look up about in the meantime.

Well, they're not supposed to be getting it as a visitor! ??? How do they prove residency?? My husband even had problems getting it, and he has a valid work visa and everything, but we only had a lease from a private person and they wouldn't accept that!

I find this a bit disturbing that people here as visitors are getting health care coverage! Its bad enough that we have so many people come here and stay for the 183 required days, get all their physicals, lab work and procedures done, then take off to their home country for the rest of the year. I have MANY patients that do that, they take advantage of our health care system and then leave. They are just taking advantage of our system.
