Landing in Canada for a short time after PR and then moving onwards

Hi

We have just received our passports with our Canadian PR . I just want to check that if we just want to do a quick landing in Canada and move onward as we have jobs outside Canada . How can we apply for our PR cards and SIN cards. We basically will have 1 to 1 and half working day in Canada .
Also what happens when the cards are ready to be picked up . Are they delivered to the address we provide or they have to be picked up in person. Can we rent a post box for some time and they can be delivered there ?
Can you authorize someone else to pick up on your behalf ?

We are Indian passport holders , If we have to come back to Canada before we get our PR cards , how do we do that . Do we apply for a visa or is there an another option

Any assistance will be appreciated .

Thanks in advance

Hi

You don't need to apply for the PR card, that is done automatically during the landing with the border officer. You will need a Canadian address for the PR card to be mailed to, a friend or family member's address is fine. Because you won't have the cards when you come back in, you can apply for a travel document http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp

You can apply for a SIN at a Service Canada location straight after landing but you're best to save that for when you come back permanently. It doesn't need to be done ahead of time, as they give you a SIN straightaway when you apply.

Hello-
The 5 year cycle to retain our Canadian PR status kick started on January 1, 2012. Though we (me and my wife) got our PR cards, but we haven’t started physically staying in Canada yet. We are still working in US on an H1B visa for our respective US employers.
My wife works for a reputed IT company who has offices all across the globe. Though it’s primarily a US corporation, but they do have a fully owned subsidiary registered in Canada. If my wife is employed by the Canadian subsidiary company (i.e. salaried employee through a Canadian firm) and is further deputed to work in US on a full time project, then does the time spent in US will count towards the required minimum two years of stay in Canada? Please advise!

No - it definitely will not count.

CIC will say that you have set up your wife's employment this way specifically to try to retain PR status while living outside of Canada.

@backinbusiness : Well you donot have to apply for PR card after landing as it will automatically be processed but upon landing you will have to provide a valid Canadian address to Immigration authorities on which they will send the PR cards after 30 days ............

Regarding SIN : You have to personaly goto any SERVICE CANADA office and apply for it but as long as you donot start living and working in Canada (SIN is of no use) so you can apply for SIN later aswell when you move to Canada !

Hope it answers your query ...........

The Canadian address is where they will send the PR cards. If they have one on file from the application, they may use that.
If you don't have an address IN Canada, they will delay the issue of the cards, as they cannot be sent outside the country by CIC.

Because, you told them you are just doing 3days landing.so no need 4 a canadian address. This means that your PR card will not be processed till you return to canada in about a year and a half. Therefore, for you and famiy to reenter Canada, you will need a "Travel Document" which you will apply for from your country!

Agreed and after they arrive in Canada, they will need to fill out a PR renewal application to get their PR cards.

The first free PR card is granted when a person lands or up to 6 months later.

That is, if someone lands and does not provide an address or says they are not staying, their PR card is not mailed. Then they have 6 months that they would still be able to come back to Canada and provide immigration with an address to mail the PR card to. If they do not, they lose their chance at this first free card and will have to fill out the forms, get new photos and apply as if it was a renewal.

It is not a big deal though. The processing time is a bit longer and it will cost $50 per person.

You can find the forms here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/prcard.asp and processing times for PR cards here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm-card.asp

Yes, if you have an address of a friend or family that would mail the PR card to you where you are, you might be better off not telling the immigration officer that you are only staying for a few days.

If you do not have an address, you can also tell them that you will provide one later, go to a UPS store and secure a Canadian mailing address with forwarding to your address in the country where you live and then call the CIC call centre and give them this address.
