Thanks Keesio and Rob, I assumed it wouldn't work but I thought I'd ask anyway. I know there is no rush, so we'll just get a bank account set up for him and wait until we get a statement :)

Thanks for sharing this! I have a question though - what did you eventually bring in to get the license transferred to an Ontario one? My husband got his license in Buffalo NY December 2012, had it for 5 months there, then moved to Arkansas where he is now. I'm just wondering, will we even need the abstract from NY? Did you do anything in particular to get the correct one? I'm a bit worried about being able to get his Ontario license!
We haven't gotten the license transferred yet. There shouldn't be a problem transferring the license as long as you have a passport and a drivers license that is valid from the US.

The problem is getting a full license with no restrictions. Technically we could have gotten it transferred but it would have been a G2 license (not a full G license meaning you would eventually have to take a road test and insurance rates would be much higher). To get the full license you have to prove 2 years of driving experience. So in my husband's case he had just renewed his license in 2013 so it only showed him as having one year experience on his actual license. The driver's abstract from NY does not show the original date he got his NY license many years ago.

I would get an Arkansas driving abstract and hopefully it has a date of issue on it that is >2 years. If it doesn't and you want a full license, I would order a "lifetime driving record" from NY state which will show the 2012. Takes about a month apparently and we haven't received ours yet.
