Hi All. I have been in a rather unfortunate and complicated situation. I graduated last year and then applied for PGWP which I got for one year because of the similar issue you all had: my passport was expiring. I called CIC then and they explained me that I can apply for a renewal after getting my passport renewed. So, on 10th March 2017, I applied for extension of work permit online. I called CIC before applying and they gave me the form 5710E and the link. When I opened the link, it said right on top, 'click here to check if you are eligible to apply online'. So I applied online with all the documentation, my old passport and my degree and also a letter of explaination why i want the extension. I was still workng at my job, hoping it shouldnt be a problem. But then something unfortunate happened. I got a reply on 23rd April night saying my work permit has been refused because I dont fulfill the requirements and I am out of status. They didnt ask me to leave the country. I was devasted. I had also applied for PR in feburary on basis on PNP(ontario).
Sadly, I called CIC next day and asked why there was rejection, since all my documents were complete. They told me I was supposed to apply pn paper. That WAS THE SOLE REASON FOR REFUSAL. I was outraged. I work in IT department and that link said I can apply online as well. They also told me that since I have no status I cannot work and must reapply for restoration and extension via paper application. I took legal advice as well, and the lawyer told the same thing. So within a day I was jobless, totally shocked what has happened. I applied on May 3rd again via paper application. They said the processing time is 4 months. My employer sent me on unpaid leave but they said if I dont hear back in June, they will hire someone else. I dont have enough for rent and I am confused. When I call CIC they tell, that my application has not even gotten a file number so I am not yet in their system yet and I really dont know what I am supposed to do. I am clueless and jobless, and soon will be penniless. I really want to know if someone had a similar situation or any suggestions for me? Something to expediate the process. I am really stressed and desperate here. :(
hello sir, sorry to hear such news. can you please share your letter of explanation so i can apply for the same.

thank you

hello sir,

can you please share me you letter of explanation, as i am in same situation.
Hi there,

The letter of request is very simple. Just mention that you are applying to remain in Canada as a temporary worker under the PGWP program. Mention the date when you applied for it (DATE) and that it was issued (DOC #) to your passport expiry date (Passport expiry date). Also note that this observation was noted in the remarks section of your document.

Mention that you have renewed your passport and therefore you are applying for a WP extension under the same conditions for the remaining time that the initial WP should had been issued. Mention that the corresponding docs related to your application are attached for they review.

In the closing paragraph say that you'd appreciate their consideration and they should contact you in case they may need any further info.

I sent the application old fashion (on paper) to Unit 555 in Alberta via Fedex Express Service. I decided to send it this via as didn't want to take risk and get rejected as I'm not under the student status anymore. The IRCC agent from the call center had no clue or are not clear when giving instructions to apply on line. Since PGWP it's only ONE TIME WP issue cannot be extended. It only can be BRIDGED if you have apply for permanent resident or you can apply for the remaining time that should have be issued in your initial PGWP and couldn't due to passport expiry date. I have consulted this with immigration specialist & lawyers.

Hope this will help.

did your work permit had a note about " the permit can be extended after the renewal of passport"

mine has no such note.
Hi there,

Mine did have it. It should be mentioned/noted in the observations section at the bottom of your document. The length of your PGWP would depend on the length of your studies in Canada. If you completed a 2-3 years program. The length of your permit would be 3-4 years.

Try to contact the ICRR center to find more info regarding your case. Provide them with your PGWP # and hopefully they can give you more info in regards to the length of your permit.

Good luck,

Hey bhatia,

Yes, I did! Follow the same steps/procedures when you first applied for your PGWP. Just make sure you include all the necessary information proving that you are extending your PGWP - an explanation letter, and/or even a copy of your old passport's information page.

If you need any help, just let me know! :)
Hey.can I ask some questions. I got my PGWP on July 2017.it only issue until my passport expire date which is 2019 April.only 1year and 9 months.
I just know that I could renew my passport now. is it ok for me send the application for renewal now which is like a year and half ahead? Or I have to wait until 3 months before it is going to expire (2019,Jan)?

Thanks very much for your help.

Guys, Please note! I extended my post graduate work permit completely free. I went to the US border and came back to canada. The officer didn't ask for a fee and the process was very easy. I just brought my passports and my current work permit and past study permit plus my graduation letter ( which I think he didnt take a look at).

Anyways, if you go to the border for extension due to passport expiration date, they won't ask for a fee (based on my experience)

Good luck!

Hello all! Can some one please provide me with clear instructions on how to apply for a postgraduate work permit extension.
PLEASE NOTE: I was only given a PGWP for 8 months due to the expiry date of my passport. My PGWP states below under notes: further extensions upon passport renewal.

I have scanned the CIC website high and low for information that fits my needs but cant seem to find any. Ive tried calling CIC but didn't get the info I wanted or atleast I dont feel secure enough. The lady emailed me a 5710E form.

Questions:
1) Do I have to pay a fee? If so how much and how?
2) Is it "MAIL" Only, is there no way to do this online? I'm guessing CIC isn't set up for such extensions online?
3) Do i have to provide some kind of letter of explanation?
4) What else do I need to know/do?

Any help would be great! Looking for someone who was in a similar situation to help or provide with info! Please and thanks!

As far as I'm concerned most (or all) of them would work pretty well. You don't need a US visa as you don't enter US, just exit Canada and tell the US officers that you wanna extend your work permit. They know all about it, you get a form from US border (they know every thing) and guide you to come back to Canada!

Hey,

I applied online to extend my PGWP, and I got approved without any issues! You are pretty much following the same procedure as when you were applying for your initial PGWP. Choose "Student" and not "Worker", then you will get through the checklist.
Hi, as I had same situation. I already applied online to extend my PGWP. Can I ask how long does it take?
